Grapefruit and its juice are continuing to gain a bitter reputation. Can it increase your risk for estrogenic cancer? Maybe. Can it interfere with certain drugs you’re taking? For sure.
Grapefruit and its juice can interact with the body’s important CYP3A4 pathway –an enzyme system responsible for metabolizing medications. By preventing the intestine from absorbing certain drugs, grapefruit and its juice can cause the med levels in your blood to soar. It only takes a modest amount of the forbidden fruit to cause this reaction, and the result can last up to 24 hours.
